Angel on MXit to support HIV/AIDS in South Africa

With the increase of AIDS deaths in South Africa, as part of the Angel project we decided to make relevant information available to users on MXit.

"South Africa is currently experiencing one of the most severe AIDS epidemics in the world. At the end of 2007, there were approximately 5.7 million people living with HIV in South Africa, and almost 1,000 AIDS deaths occurring every day."...

With technology in our hands we are able to empower those who are affected by HIV/AIDS and see how we can bring about the reconstruction of our nation through education on every possible platform. We hope with information and contact details at their fingertips on Angel (we will expand this over the next few weeks) that this will be a step in the right direction in educating our youth.

How to access Angel on MXit:

Find your Angel on MXit

Last Friday, 12 December 2008, at the graduation of The Reconstructed we launched a new 24hour service "Angel". The Angel project on MXit was birthed out of the need that many of our young people need to be informed about the dangers of substance abuse on a platform that they will be able to interact with. Angel is a collaboration between CPUT, MXit and Impact Direct that provides MXit users with information concerning: substance abuse, HIV/Aids, Abuse, depression, stress and coping. Each of these topics are then further explored. For example Substance Abuse have topics such as "What is Substance Abuse?, What is Addiction?, Type of Substances, Stages of drug dependency, Signs of Drug Use and categories of drugs. Under the Type of substances Angel gives more details about the most common drugs and this will be updated on a regular basis. Each of these substances are then further broken down. Each drug will be described and discussed (Street names, how it is used, characteristics, short term effects, long term effects and withdrawal symptoms).Other than just giving more information about the various topics Angel also provide a "Find your Angel" service which gives users of Angel contact numbers to various services in the different provinces. We realised that many people don't know where to go to for help when facing certain social issues and we're trying to help people especially our youth with the info in a way that they are comfortable with.Angel is an additional service to DAS (Drug Advice Support which only runs Tue and Thu 3-5pm) and runs 24/7 and no cost involved to subscribe to the service. We are excited to see how Angel will be used to change lives accross our nation.

The stats for yesterdays session:2168 messages

Thank you Lord for your faithfulness.

DAS@mxit

I am so looking forward to today's session.Last week,s session went well with the new server.God is so faithful and HE will never let us down.I am quite curious to see what the stats will be at the end of today's session s it is a public holiday today. This will give us a more or less idea what the sessions will be like over next couple of weeks.Things can however change. Will have the stats of today's session on later.

God BLESS.,

DAS celebrates 10 000 conversations

Today Drug Advice Support (DAS)(using mobile instant messaging to offer advice and support for people at risk) has reached an incredible milestone of more than 10000 conversations(10 081 to be exactly) since our inception almost 5 months ago. This is a wonderful achievement as we've received more than 40 000 messages with over 4000 subscribers to our service. The use of technology with people who cares has made it possible to reach so many people across our nation and this is only the beginning. This service has proved that lives can be changed and that there is hope for our young people as we fight this battle of substance abuse and other social ills an instant message at a time.

Today we ran the DAS session from a server based in USA. There were some improvements made to the system.

It seemed to be more stable and quicker with added functionalities. The guys enjoyed the session today.

We managed 309 conversations, over 2000 messages were exchanged and 12 new contacts added to the service. All this happened in only 2 hours.

I am truly blessed to be part of this project that is reaching so many people out there.

Over 1400 messages in 2 hours!

Today was a good day for DAS@Mxit! We had a productive session on DAS today. Over 1400 messages handled in 2 hours.

Wesley Nitsckie joined us today so we could have the server close by. It was good for us to have him there because when we had any issues we could just ask him. The interface from which we worked was alot more stable and we enjoyed our session today.

We are trusting God to have our own space, own wireless connection and laptops.

Till next week, cheers.

Hectic counselling session

Hi there everybody,

Today's session was crazy! We had a multitude of contacts utilising the service today. We tried our best to keep up but we had quite a few technical difficulties that of course made things worse.

We went on from about 14h:30 till about 18h:15 and there were still many contacts online waiting to be helped. The good news is that somebody is currently working on a platform from which we will do the counselling and we will hopefully have it available by Thursday when we go online again. The new system is more stable and easier to work on. I cant wait for Thursday.

Watch this space for updates!
Cheers!

Taking over the world

Mxit through technology is gonna take over the world

The Omnipresent God we serve!!!!

Last week Thursday i counseled a young lady via mxit that was going through some very tough things. She was molested by a family when she was younger. She eventually turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with the pain.I ended up praying for her via mxit and although she was hundreds of kilometers away she felt the power of God.God is so awesome!!!Even though i was not near her God still touched her.So people out there if you know about someone going through a tough time or using drugs, pray for them as i know that God will do something in their lives and change their lives.
hello all..

on the 15/10/08 we did a presentation to grade 7 learners we rolled out our mxit project and the next day some of the kids was online and they wanted to reach out to
there younger brother that is smoking okka pipe,I really did not know what to say
but what i know is okka pipe is a gateway to other drugs like dagga, tik eg. and people use it as a tool to use drugs.

and we also had a interview with one of the cput students that is doing a project on social networking.

see you im out

Today's encouragement

Hey,

Today was another good day with the mxit counseling.

Today I counselled a 23 old lady from Boksburg who was suicidal at the time. She was going through a tough time, her father recently died after suffering for a long time and her boyfriend whom she says she loves very much is addicted to drugs. To make matters worse is that he is also a womaniser...

She initially logged onto MXIT to get help for her boyfriend, but I ended up encouraging her upon finding out that she is a backslider. Things went wrong for her after her dad died and her boyfriend got hooked onto drugs. At the end of the session she was no longer suicidal and decided to give Jesus a chance again in her life. I am trusting God for an awesome testimony from her in the near future...

I also advised her on how to handle the situation with her boyfriend and made her understand that she cannot take responsibility for her boyfriends drug addiction.

She is going to ask her boyfriend to log onto MXIT on Tuesday next week so I can offer him advice on how to face and hopefully overcome his addiction.

MXIT used to encourage a believer...

Hello everyone,

Tuesday's mxit counseling was good!

I had the opportunity to encourage a mother who has a 16 year old daughter who has a friend thats being abused by her adopted father. She needed advice on how to help this young lady as God layed it on her heart to do so. At the end of the session the she (the mom) was on fire and ready to take up the responsibility to help this family.

Her feedback after the session is she found the service very helpful and she felt encouraged that God's kingdom can be extended through social networking applications like MXIT.

Proverbs: 27: 17 "People learn from one another, just as iron sharpens iron"

God bless everyone out there!!!

Mxit counseling on Tuesday was very blessed. There was some serious cases we were faced with. One of the many cases was a young women that was using drugs and alcohol because of things that happened in the past.People are faced with serious problems out there. We are just so blessed that God can use us in such a awesome way.We are totally dependent on the guidance of the Holy Spirit.I just thank God and give him all the glory and honour for the wonderful things he is going to do in the peoples lives we come in contact with

mxit counseling

Our mxit counseling on Tuesday was very good and we had lots of new contacts.

God bless.
